Robin Maclagan
Hi,
I write in connection with your proposal to set
up a mailing list for cyclists who attended Loughborough.
As you will note from the heading I predate
the LSCC; I was a student of Mechanical Engineering (HDMech) between 1955
and 1960 at what was then the College of Technology.
Cycling was, in 1955/6, a BUCU sport, thereafter
a UAU sport. Some Unis didn't like the set-up and kept out; the usual politics!.
In cycling terms I had one good year at Loughborough,
1958, when I won the UAU Road Race Championship, the BLRC East Midlands
Section (now BCF Division) RR Champs and the Bradford Telegraph and Argus
3 day, this last as a member of a UAU team which consisted entirely of
LCCC cyclists. I was also placed in most of the UAU Time Trial Champs.
I have cycled competitively for most of the intervening
years, but work and family commitments have prevented me from getting in
the prizelists, except very occasionally. I have now retired from work,
my mileages have increased and I occasionally get a VTTA standard, age
group or handicap prize. I have started Road Racing again, after 30 years,
with the LVRC, so far nothing better than a 10th.
I have recently re-established contact with a
couple of my LCCC contemporaries, Mike Daly and Melvyn Hirst. I prompted
them to contact you but have not heard whether they did.
I list below the names of some other cyclists
who passed through Loughborough whilst I was there. Between us we have
current addresses for those in the upper part. If you have heard from any
in the second part please ask them to get in contact.
